You need to instill it with a sense of purpose. Wait for a cool day and stand in front of it wearing an anorak and shivering. Tell it how important it is for the thermostat (try calling it Mr. Stat as a mark of respect) to do it's job well and how much it will be appreciated. If you promise to clean it regularly and give it time off during hot weather you should be able to motivate it to put in it's best efforts.

(Gimmie a break. It's better than no answer at all.)

You will need to find out the manufacturer of your AC/Heat unit including model number. Then go to their website and grab a manual and that will tell you the proper wiring. Some of the units are reverse cycle, while others are heat strip, if it is heat strip there should be a setting to turn off reverse cycle, you don't want them both unless you want to throw breakers continually.
